Corona and Zúñiga on FC Porto’s radar

It looks as if Pinto da Costa will once again reach into his tailored suit pocket for his cheque book, after recent reports linking both Jesús Corona and Camilo Zúñiga to the Estádio do Dragão.

Both players would bolster the winger and full-back positions, respectively, areas that having a dearth in terms of quality options, with Tello and Hernâni, as well as Cissokho, José Ángel and Ricardo Pereira, leaving a lot to be desired.

Twente’s ‘Speedy Gonzales’ excited by potential Porto move

The agent of the 22-year-old Mexico international has already said his player is eager to join the ranks of Porto, according to O Jogo and Lisbon-based paper A Bola.

“Jesus Corona was excited when he found out about Porto’s hypothetical interest in his services,” said Matias Bunge to the Porto-based paper on Tuesday.

Worth the gamble?

Former Nacional manager and Liga MX coach extraordinaire Pedro Caixinha has had his say on Porto’s interest in Corona. “He’s a cheeky kid, very skilled and strong one-on-one. He remind me of Quaresma when he joined Sporting. He’s very strong and creates imbalances in the final third.”

The former Santos Laguna gaffer, who led the club to their first league title and the final of CONCACAF’s Champions League in a 3-year stint, believes that Corona is worth his hefty price tag. “Expensive? For the attributes he possesses and for his work ethic, ten million euros will be easily tripled after one season.

Far from a finished article, but talent aplenty

With fourteen caps and two goals to his name for El Tri, including an effort against Jamaica in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup final (Watch his goal here), “El Tecatito” would add much needed firepower and pace on the flanks, with the likes of Cristian Tello misfiring and expectedly on his way back to Catalonia at season’s end.

With 13 goals in 47 games for Twente after his €3.5 million from Monterrey in 2013 (Watch his 2014/15 season highlights here), Corona can play through the middle as a No. 10 or on the flanks, leading the Eredivisie last season in successful dribbles by some margin.

Mexico’s “next big thing” with his sheer pace, wicked shot, tremendous range and astute dribbling often freeing him to get into dangerous positions, the starlet is still a diamond in the rough.

Not always the most adept passer, grittier opposition outside of the Netherlands could undo Corona, with a lack of experience in Europe’s upper echelons an obvious mark against his name.

Nevertheless, still barely out of diapers, “El Tecatito” would be given a solid platform under Lopetegui and the opportunity to lock horns with more steely defences both domestically and in Europe whilst challenging for silverware, with fellow Mexican internationals Hector Herrera and Raúl Gudiño both proving experiencing success in the blue and white.

Porto’s Colombian love affair continues

With the likes of Radamel Falcao, Jackson Martinez, James Rodriguez, Juan Quintero and Hector Quiñones and youngster Leonardo Ruiz all wearing the blue and white of Os Dragões in the past few seasons, FC Porto are now looking towards signing Colombian international long-stay Camilo Zúñiga.

The Napoli mainstay has been reported to be a target for the northern club by Italian paper Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday. FC Porto is one of the clubs interested in the 29-year-old right-back, who can also operate on the left, with sources already linking the likes of Galatasaray and Sampdoria as interested parties.

After Alex Sandro’s exit from the Dragão and uncertainty over Cissokho and Angel’s eligibility as replacements, along with a shortage of options at the right-back position, the former Siena and Atletico Nacional starlet would add much needed depth to both sides of Lopetegui’s back four, as well as a potential contender for the starting 11.

With new coach Maurizio Sarri preferring Christian Maggio at right-back in preseason and in Serie A, the chance to play regular football domestically and abroad will be a real incentive for the veteran approaching the 30-year-old mark.
